Event Details... The Girls Went Out To Play:
Heritage Fashion Show and Tea Fashion History Productions returns to Parkwood with their latest presentation which examines social history through fashion. In this presentation, Sarah Walker and Diane Reid, examine the pursuit of sport and leisurely activities by women and the restraints prescribed by society with regards to dress and decorum from 1870 through 1960. This presentation will examine societal attitudes and the expectations of dress in the areas of swimming; equestrain; golf; etc.
We can all imagine what it would be like to swim in wool, dressed from ankle to the top of our head!
This presentation has a fitting link with the Parkwood story, as the McLaughlin Daughters loved to participate in sport and many of the societal conventions and expectations of the decades being examined in the presentation were expected of Eileen, Mildred, Isabel, Hilda and Billie. As young girls the lasting impressions of the strict Victorian order would have been part of their education within the nursery, but as young women, the freedom being found with the rising hemlines and less restrictive clothing of the 1920s would have been a welcomed change Low tea ( scones, preserves and beverages) will be served along with the presentation.
The heritage fashion show and tea takes place on Sunday, January 17, from 2pm to 4pm in the Parkwood Sunroom. Tickets are $20.00 per person and may be purchased at the Parkwood Business Office Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 to 5:00pm or by calling our ticket agent at 905-433-4311.
For those who are not aware, Parkwood is a national historic site in Oshawa, the R.S. Mclaughin estate. R.S. Mclaughin, an auto baron, was the founder of GM canada.
